Officer Shoots North Amityville Man Who Fired First At Police: PD

The man was wanted in the case of a taxi robbery and for menacing, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison says.

AMITYVILLE, NY — A man was injured after he was shot by police while attempting to escape arrestin North Amityville, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said in a press conference on Wednesday.

At about 11:45 a.m., two officers were escorting a prisoner back to the station house when they observed Jayvon Bell, 21, who was wanted for a May 10 taxi robbery as well as menacing and a missing loaded firearm on June 3, Harrison said.

After they put out a description of Bell, two First Precinct officers in plain clothes arrived at Bell's location on Maple Street, he added.

Bell ran from the officers into a Maple Street backyard, jumping over a fence, Harrison said.

The officers pursued Bell into the yard; Bell pulled out a firearm and shot at least one round at an officer, Harrison said.

One of the officers returned fire several times, striking Bell on the right side of his body, he said.

Bell was arrested and taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is currently under surgery for non-life threatening injuries, Harrison said.

The officers went to a local hospital to be treated for tinnitus.
