Suffolk Police Rescue Injured Swan in Santapogue Creek
Swan was found with fishing hook in its bill and a fishing line around its neck.
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers helped to rescue an injured swan in West Babylon on Wednesday morning.
Police said a 911 caller reported a swan in Santapogue Creek with a fish hook stuck in its bill and a fishing line around its neck, preventing it from eating or defending itself.
The officers arrived on the scene, near Montauk Highway, finding the water too shallow for their normal police boat. A nearby good samaritan, Gerry Robedee, allowed the officers to use his 14-foot Carolina Skiff boat to reach the injured swan.
The two officers located the swan and removed the fishing line and hook from the bird's neck and mouth. The swan was then released back into the wild.
