Winter Storm Warning in Effect for Lindenhurst

Set to expire at 6 p.m. as snow is expected to taper off to flurries by this evening and a sunny, cold day is expected for Sunday and rain for Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning that's in effect until 6 p.m. for Suffolk County. And the snow - with some pockets of sleet - is expected to continue until this evening, tapering off to flurries.

Up until today this Winter has been snow-free and relatively mild, compared with last year when we were digging out from several snowstorms by this point.

And the last time the NWS issued warnings for snow in the area was the back on October 29.

However, the and weren't taking the forecast for snow lightly, sending out Department of Public Works crews out early today to sand and salt the local Lindenhurst roads.

While not enough for the DPW crews to plow, the storm has produced a few inches in and around Lindy. The NWS has snow totals so far for Suffolk County at a little more than an inch up to six inches.

The NWS warns residents of limited visbilities and slippery road conditions - which have caused so far on Southern State Parkway.

Those conditions prompted Babylon Town officials to also advise residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, and Lindenhurst Mayor Tom Brennan said that while the Village's roads continue to be sanded and salted, some of side roads are still snowy.

In addition to the Winter Storm Warning, the NWS has issued a small craft advisory and a gale warning, which could be found here on the NWS website.

By this evening weather conditions are expected to improve, with a sunny, cold day expected for Sunday. Temperatures are expected tomorrow to be near 36 degrees, according to the NWS.

Sunday night will bring a chance of sleet and rain, with the weather changing over to all rain for Monday and temperatures expected to warm up to near 53 degrees by then.

A full seven-day outlook could be found here on the NWS website.
