1st Area Shark Sighting; Monitoring In Place At LI Beaches

"I encourage all New Yorkers to listen to local authorities and take precautions," Gov. Hochul said.

ROCKAWAY BEACH, NY — Amid the area's first shark sighting of the season, Gov. Hochul is reminding about summer protocols to ensure the safety of swimmers.

The shark was spotted at Rockaway Beach.

Five drones were added at state park beaches on Long Island for a total of 22 drones.

A dozen drone pilots are circling the beaches. In all, 41 people, including lifeguards, park police and operations staff are monitoring for shark activity.

"This summer, we expanded shark surveillance at our beautiful Long Island beaches to help ensure New Yorkers can safely cool down in the ocean and enjoy the sunshine," Hochul said. "After the first shark sighting of the season, I encourage all New Yorkers to listen to local authorities and take precautions to help ensure safe and responsible beach trips this summer."

The Department of Environmental Conservation encourages Long Islanders to be aware of their surroundings at beaches, with tips, such as:

  • Avoid areas with seals, schools of fish and splashing fish
  • Avoid swimming at dusk, night, and dawn
  • Avoid murky water
  • Stay close to shore, where feet can touch the bottom
