Obituaries: Carey, Duffy and Spiritis

  • Geraldine I. Carey of Long Beach died on Dec. 19, 2010. Carey was a former resident of Queens Village and Bayridge. Her husband, Dennis Carey, predeceased her. She is survived by her children Geraldine Gibney (James), Dennis E. (Barbara), William G. (Michele), Virginia Kavanagh (James), Thomas (Annmarie) and Irene Riegel (Scott), and 20 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her funeral service was held at Mackent Mortuary in Island Park and Mass at St. Ignatius Martyr Church in Long Beach. Internment was at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
  • Mary A. (Driscoll) Duffy of Long Beach died on Jan. 9. Duffy was a retired math teacher at Elwood Junior High School. She is survived by her husband John; son John Denis (Melissa); grandchildren Mary, Teagan and Maggie; brothers John and James; and 15 nieces and nephews. Her funeral service was held at Mackent Mortuary in Island Park and Mass at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Point Lookout. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, send donations to Hospice Care Network, 70 Pinelawn Rd, Melville, NY 11747.    
  • Mark A. Spiritis, a Long Beach attorney, died of cancer. He was 61. Spiritis graduated from Long Beach High School as a member of the national honor society and salutatorian in 1967. He earned his bachelor’s degree from New York University, and graduated from Yeshiva University's Cardozo Law School. Spiritis practiced law for more than 30 years, specializing in family law, and was Nassau County’s deputy attorney in family courts from 1999 to 2004. He is survived by his daughter Jenni Spiritis, son Josef and his wife Susan of East Atlantic Beach; son Michael of Barnum Island; brothers Glen and his wife Jo-Ann and Scot of Long Beach. Funeral service was held Star of David Chapel on Wellwood Avenue followed by burial in Wellwood Cemetery.
