Body Of Nassau Boater Found Weeks After Vessel Capsizes

LONG BEACH, NY — Police have found the body of a second Farmingdale man who died after a boat capsized at Jones Beach Inlet earlier this month.

On the morning of Saturday, May 2, a 22-foot angler fishing boat was traversing rough water at the inlet at Point Lookout and was hit by large waves. The boat overturned and threw all four occupants overboard, Nassau County police said.

John Costa, 54, who was operating the capsized vessel, was removed from the water by a police aviation dive team and later died at a hospital.

Authorities searched for fellow boater Joseph Sparacio, 55, who was also thrown from the boat. On Sunday, police were notified that a man had washed ashore near a home on Bayside Drive in Breezy Point. He was identified as Sparacio on Tuesday, police said.

Two other men, ages 24 and 26, were pulled out of the water, and hospitalized for hypothermia and injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
