City Recording Provides Storm Evacuation Information

Normal emergency services may not be available to residents who stay in Long Beach.

Long Beach residents are mandated to vacate the barrier island no later than 5 p.m. Saturday, according to a recorded phone message at the City of Long Beach.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano on Friday ordered an evacuation of all residents living south of Sunrise Highway, from the Queens line to Rockville Centre and south of Merrick Road, from Rockville Centre to the Nassau-Suffolk border.

“After 5 p.m on Saturday, if you choose to stay, you do so at your own risk and our normal emergency services may not be available to you,” the recording states.

The recording also informs callers that if they need transporation to an emergency shelter, they can take the Long Island Rail Road to Valley Strem station prior to 12 p.m. Saturday, or residents can make arrangements to get to one of the city’s pickup locations at East School on Neptune Boulevard, City Hall on West Chester Street or West School on Maryland Avenue in order to be bused to a shelter from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The city’s bus system will not operate on a regular schedule “to facilitate using our buses for evacuation purposes,” the recording states.

The message can be heard in full by dialing 516-431-1000.
