LIDO BEACH, NY — A humpback whale that washed ashore in Lido Beach has died, according to officials.

The whale was found around 6:30 a.m. Monday along the Town of Hempstead's Lido Beach, and died shortly after. It was a male humpback whale about 35 feet long, according to Town of Hempstead Supervisor Donald Clavin.

Clavin said the town is working with state and federal officials in the matter. The whale has been dragged back from the high tide line, and officials will perform a necropsy tomorrow to determine how it died.

After that, the town will work with the state Department of Environmental Conservation to find an appropriate burial site for the whale.

"It's amazing to see, but it's very sad at the same time," Clavin said.

This is the fifth humpback whale to be beached along the Barrier Island since 2017, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Though Clavin said this is one of the largest in recent memory.

It is unknown at this time what caused the whale to wash ashore.
