Long Beach Native Larry Brown Returns to College Coaching

Will lead SMU in Big East Conference.


Long Beach native and longtime NBA coach Larry Brown has return to coaching college hoops after nearly a quarter century.

A graduated from Long Beach High School, Brown on Monday was introduced as the men’s basketball coach as SMU, the Dallas school that has not won an NCAA tournament game since Brown won a national title at Kansas in 1988, according to the Associated Press.

About his return to coaching, the 71-year-old Brown said:

"When I look in the mirror, I get kind of scared. But inside, I feel like I can do this forever."

In December 2010, Brown resigned from his post as the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. The Hall of Fame coach has more than 1,100 career wins and is one of the all-time greats in league history. He played ball at the University of North Carolina and has led his teams to 17 playoff appearances, eight 50-win seasons, seven division titles, three conference championships and one NBA Championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2003-04.He also won an NCAA title with Kansas in 1987-88, making him the only head coach ever to win both an NCAA title and an NBA championship.
