Thanks to funding from Music Rising, the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation has been able to donate $18,430 worth of instruments to the school to assist with the school's rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The donation included one 88-key digital keyboard, two baritones, two violas, one double French horn, one 3/4 tuba and two alto saxophones.

“Our hearts go out to all of you in the Long Beach community as you heal from this tragic disaster,” said Tricia Steel, program director of the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation website explains that the organization “keeps music alive in our schools by donating musical instruments to under-funded music programs, giving youngsters the many benefits of music education, helping them to be better students and inspiring creativity and expression through playing music.”

Created in 2005, Music Rising “was launched to rescue the musical culture of the Central Gulf region of the United States from the destruction caused by the catastrophic hurricanes of the summer of 2005 by replacing the musical instruments lost or destroyed in the deluge,” according to the organization’s website.

Said Steel: “We hope the donated instruments will help get the music program back on its feet so that students can once again enjoy the tremendous benefits of music education.”
