Patch Question: The Proper Role of Government?
Weigh in with your thoughts on the nature of rights in America.

With Election Day days away and as the 2012 elections draw near, Americans are asking some fundamental questions about how we should be governed. The recent rise of two political movements — Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party — have helped clarify some sharp philosophical dividing lines over the proper role of government, especially on economic matters. For example:
Some Americans believe it is government’s job to spread the riches of the wealthiest one percent of Americans to the other 99 percent, whereas other Americans believe it is every individual's right to keep what he earns.
Some believe it is their right to have government pay for their college tuition, home mortgages and medical care, as well as provide them with jobs. Others believe that each individual only has a right to pursue their needs and voluntarily trade with others toward that end.
Some believe government officials should be able to regulate the economy and businesses for a social "greater good.” Others believe the market should be left free and government’s purpose is only to prosecute those who use force or fraud against others.
In short, some Americans believe that one person's need gives him a claim to other people’s money and property, while others contend that each individual has a right to his own life, liberty, property and pursuit of happiness.
