Pedestrian Fatally Struck By LIRR Train In East Rockaway: MTA

The train had left Penn Station at around 11:52 p.m., headed east for Long Beach, an MTA spokesperson said.

EAST ROCKAWAY, NY — A train from Penn Station to Long Beach fatally struck a man on the tracks at Centre Avenue Station in East Rockaway early Tuesday morning, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.

The eastbound train left Penn Station at about 11:52 p.m., and struck the man around 12:38 a.m., according to the MTA. The train had been partially-platformed, and customers got out and to take alternate transportation, an MTA spokesperson said.

Long Island Rail Road officials shut down power on both tracks for about an hour and 20 minutes as emergency personnel responded, and the next eastbound train to Long Beach was held at Valley Stream for about 38 minutes while the investigation was underway, according to the MTA.

When cleared to proceed, this train accommodated any remaining customers from the incident train to points east, the MTA said.

The 1:52 a.m. train from Penn Station to Long Beach was also delayed at Valley Stream, but the morning rush hour was not affected, according to the MTA.
