Question of the Day: Clearing the Foundation Block and Superblock?
Weigh in with your thoughts on this issue.
The private owners of the foundation block and the Superblock are clearing these adjoining properties that abut the boardwalk and are bound by Broadway between Edwards and Long Beach boulevards. Workers are making room for various facilities and staging areas for events surrounding the Quiksilver Pro New York surfing competition coming in September. According to the official program for the event (available at local surf shops), a concert stage, bike and skateboard parks, sponsors, rest rooms, concessions and bars will populate these areas.
Part of what is now being cleared are concrete slabs that have been on the foundation block for several decades, including remnants of the foundation of the New Long Beach Hotel that, according to local historians, was planned to go up there during the early 1900s but was never developed. Since that time, no substantial structure has ever been developed on the foundation block.
Patch readers have either commented on our site or contacted us about the work presently going on there. Some have said the work has been a long time coming and are glad to see it go, while others have expressed concern that the concrete is being removed. Are you in one of these camps, or perhaps you have a different opinion about what’s going on there?
