Monaghan knocked out Dion “Rex” Stanley of Kansas City, Mo., with an overhand right at 1:51 in the first round, extending his record to 18-0 with 11 KOs. Referree Harvey Dock waved off the fight after Stanley (11-5, 5 KOs) tried to get to his feet but wobbled and looked to have injured his ankle, according to ESPN.
Monaghan entered the ring to bag pipe music to reflect his Irish heritage and was cheered on by a large contingent at the famed hall, which was hosting only its second boxing event, according to Boxing Insider.
“It’s an honor,” Monaghan told Newsday about his match at Radio City. “The last guy to fight there was Roy Jones. And for me to be the second light heavy weight to walk in there, it just blows my mind. I was the biggest Roy Jones fan when I was a kid. He was like Michael Jordan to me.”
