Up To 3 Inches Of Snow Possible On Long Island Early This Week

Could a long, brown winter finally turn white just before spring?

After a long, brown winter, could snow finally be making a return to Long Island?

Yes, but it may not stay long. The National Weather Service is forecasting 1-3 inches of wet snow and sleet across the north section of the area starting Monday evening before the accumulation transitions to rain. South coastal areas are predicted to see less than an inch of snow or sleet.

Temperatures will begin Monday evening in the low to mid-30s and rise to the mid- or upper 30s, according to the weather service, which warned of possible minor coastal flooding Monday night and early Tuesday morning along the western Long Island Sound, including Hempstead Bay.

Snowfall amounts for Long Island remain uncertain, according to the weather service.

“It will be dependent on intensity of snowfall at the onset, how quickly warm air comes in aloft from the southwest, and wind direction at the surface,” according to the weather service. “Southern portions of LI and NYC may see little snow with quickest warming, while the northernmost areas could see a quick 1 to 3 inches before changeover.”
