How An Air Source Heat Pump Changed A Long Island Family’s Way Of Life
Experience the benefits of lower energy costs, improved air quality and enhanced comfort with this simple home upgrade.

David and Dalia L, with a family of seven, had a problem. They had a 20-year-old A/C system that was not working very well. Add to that their natural gas boiler that was burning a lot of fuel all winter and still not getting the job done. The result was a home that was never comfortable in any season. And their heating and cooling bills were unmanageable some months.
“We love to entertain, but the kitchen and living areas of our home were always too hot. Even in winter,” says Dalia. “Visiting family always ended up staying at a hotel. It was that uncomfortable.”
Her husband David was also hoping for a fix to their freezing cold finished basement—a room that served as a playroom for their five children. “It was comical,” says David. “Our kids would have to dress in winter coats to play down there most months of the year.”

A PSEG Long Island partner contractor worked with the family for the perfect solution.
“Our contractor suggested a heat pump system that came with incredible rebates, which made it really affordable for us,” says David. “But it was the technology and sustainability that sold it.”
The solution for the family was an air source heat pump system with the addition of a mini-split unit for the basement, which meant the room’s temperature could be controlled separately to warm the area in the colder months.
“I had my doubts initially,” admits Dalia. “But I am a believer now. Our bills are lower. Our home is the perfect temperature year-round. And my family now stays with us, and we can gather in the kitchen without anyone having heat stroke,” she laughs.
One feature the family really appreciates is the remote technology. With a smart thermostat, they can adjust the temperature from anywhere, helping them save energy and costs. When they are out, they love to use their phone app to turn the system on and arrive home to a perfectly warmed or cooled space.
Should you consider an air source heat pump, too?
Here are the top five reasons to consider upgrading:
- Efficiency and cost savings: Overall, heat pumps are up to three times more energy efficient than traditional heating. To see how much you might save with a heat pump, try this easy comparison tool.
- Low carbon footprint: Unlike burning oil or gas, which produces high carbon emissions, heat pumps release zero emissions.
- Cleaner and safer: Because heat pumps filter air and dehumidify it, the air you breathe in your home will be better quality. And a heat pump won’t create oil fumes, gas leaks, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Available in ducted or ductless models: Homes with no air ducts can use a mini-split unit in a single room or multizone plan. Or use your home’s ductwork for whole-house system comfort.
- Tax credits, incentives, rebates, and low financing rates available: There are several ways to reduce the cost of switching to a heat pump—from tax credits to rebates and financing offers. And if your household income meets eligibility requirements, you might qualify for free installation and more through PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Plus Program.
