Roland Auctions is located in Glen Cove, a city on the north shore of Long Island, with a rich and diverse history. Glen Cove was founded in 1668 by Joseph Carpenter and four other settlers, who purchased the land from the Matinecock Indians. They named the settlement Musketa Cove, meaning “place of rushes” in the native language. They built a saw mill and a grist mill on the Glen Cove Creek, and used the harbor to ship lumber to New York City.
In 1834, the name of the settlement was changed to Glen Cove, to attract more residents from the city. Glen Cove became a popular destination for wealthy families, who built lavish country estates along the waterfront, creating the Gold Coast of Long Island. In 1918, Glen Cove became an independent city, separating from the Town of Oyster Bay. It was the site of several successful manufacturing facilities, such as the Duryea Motor Wagon Company, the American Hard Rubber Company, and the Li Tungsten Corporation. It also attracted many immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and Eastern Europe, who worked in the industries, local agriculture, and retail businesses4
Today, Glen Cove is a vibrant and diverse city, with over 10 miles of waterfront, including three public beaches, two nature preserves, a public golf course, and a public park. It has a population of about 28,000 people, with many cultural and ethnic backgrounds. It has a historic downtown area, with many shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
