Saturday Storms Bring Tornado, Hail Threat To Long Island: NWS

Forecasters said isolated severe storms are expected across much of Long Island on Saturday.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A line of strong thunderstorms could bring hail, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes to parts of Long Island on Saturday, according to the latest National Weather Service forecast.

The NWS on Saturday said a strong cold front Saturday evening will produce showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. A brief tornado is also possible, according to forecasters.

Storms are expected to move through New York City, the lower Hudson Valley and southwest Connecticut during a three-hour period starting at 6 p.m., forecasters said. Storms will likely move into Long Island and other areas east of New York City starting around 8 p.m.; however, forecasters said the strength of the storms will likely weaken as they move across the region.

Forecasters said there is a marginal risk of severe weather to most of Long Island, meaning isolated severe storms are expected.

According to forecasters, the storms could bring damaging winds with gusts of more than 58 mph, which could result in damaged trees and power outages. Hail and an isolated tornado are also possible, according to the NWS.
