Stony Brook Resident Nominated for 41st College Television Awards

Jinuk Choi Nominated in Animation Category for Television Academy Foundation's National Student Competition

Jinuk Choi, of Stony Brook, NY, has been nominated for the prestigious Television Academy Foundation’s 41st College Television Awards. The College Television Awards recognizes and rewards excellence in student-produced programs from colleges and universities nationwide. Winners in the competition will be announced by television stars at the awards ceremony on March 26.

Choi is nominated in the Animation Series category for producing, writing and directing “Beyond The Line", a project he created while attending the School of Visual Arts in New York City, NY.

Choi’s animated piece is a story about a wheelchair that dreams of one day being as fast as a racing car. One night, the wheelchair decides to have a race in the hospital hallway.

“I went to a children's hospital to visit a sick young cousin and the experience inspired me,” said Choi. “It was sad to see the children filled with a kind of downcast air. Then I saw the children watching animation as if they were looking at the sky from inside a well. I realized the animations weren't just killing time, but a channel to imagine and dream beyond the hospital space. I decided to make an animated story for people who need hope and joy.”

“Being nominated for a College Television Award has motivated me to continue making animation,” said Choi. “I wish to contribute to the television industry by promoting more diversity in stories and characters that haven’t received a lot of attention from society.”
