Uniondale School District Hosts a Freedom Day to celebrate Juneteenth

The Uniondale School District recently celebrated Juneteenth with a community event, dubbed Freedom Day, celebrating the 159th anniversary of the Emancipation of enslaved people in Texas. Organized by the Uniondale School District’s Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), the event featured local vendors, food trucks, entertainment, and a variety of engaging activities that brought the community together in a spirit of reflection and festivity

"Today's Juneteenth celebration was a powerful testament to our collective journey toward justice and unity,” said Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil, Superintendent of Uniondale School District. “Witnessing our community come together to reflect, learn, and celebrate fills me with hope and pride. Let us carry this spirit forward, continuing to educate, uplift, and honor the legacy of freedom for generations to come."
The event showcased Uniondale School District’s commitment to honoring the diverse backgrounds of all their scholars. The PTSA’s initiative successfully fostered a sense of community connection, allowing students and residents to enjoy a day filled with culture and camaraderie. Local vendors and food trucks provided a variety of offerings, while entertainment kept attendees engaged and uplifted.
Freedom Day was a day to come together and celebrate the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of the Uniondale community as they strive for equality and belonging. It was not just a celebration, but a poignant reminder of the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of the Uniondale community.
As the day concluded, the community left with a renewed sense of unity and a shared commitment to continue honoring and celebrating the rich history and legacy of Juneteenth. The Uniondale School District looks forward to building on this momentum and fostering even deeper connections within the community in the years to come.
