Car Plows Into Canal Street Fruit Stand, 1 Dead: NYPD
A minivan hit at least seven people — killing one — in Chinatown Monday night when the driver crashed into a fruit stand, police said.

CHINATOWN, NY — One person was killed and at least six others were injured after a minivan driven by an elderly man jumped a curb and crashed into a crowd of people on Canal Street Monday night, police said.
The vehicle plowed into pedestrians near Forsyth Street in Chinatown at about 6:55 p.m after the driver mistakenly hit the gas, sped in reverse onto the sidewalk and smashed into a fruit stand, police said.

Emergency responders pronounced one victim dead on the scene and rushed several others to Bellevue Hospital. Two remain in critical condition and at least four others had non-life threatening injuries, FDNY said.
The driver remained on the scene, police said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio weighed in on the collision late Monday night.
"Terrible car crash on Canal St has killed 1 pedestrian and injured 6 more. A full NYPD investigation is underway," the mayor tweeted.
"We cannot accept loss of life on our streets as inevitable. We will continue working harder every day to reach #VisionZero."
Authorities warned commuters to avoid the area until further notice.
