Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:

  1. Commercial leases with the city at 125 White St. have been officially terminated in preparation for the demolition of the Manhattan Detention Center. The current facility is planned to be replaced with a modern 30-story high rise jail. Although the city offered modest compensation for the termination of the leases, local small businesses are left scrambling to keep themselves afloat. (Bowery Boogie)
  2. The high popular Queens-based taco truck Birria-Landia will soon open a Manhattan location, and the Lower East Side is among the possible destinations. What will be the eatery's fourth truck is still about six months from opening. The new truck will serve the same delicious menu as the company's flagship location. (Eater NY)
