Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:
- Members of New York's AAPI community rallied in Foley Square on Jan. 30 as part of its continued effort to draw attention to anti-Asian hate crimes that have been on the rise over the years. Over 100 people rallied on Sunday afternoon, including appearances by Senators John Liu and Chuck Schumer. Rallies were held simultaneously in six major cities throughout the United States. (amNY)
- Uncle Lou is now open on Mulberry Street, the product of a man in his 60s who did not enjoy retirement. Louis Wong retired after a long business career in Chinatown and used his community connections and experiences to open a dream restaurant. The Cantonese cuisine has already become a popular stitch in the culinary fabric of the neighborhood. (Uncle Lou)
- Lunar New Year celebrations are a huge part of the community, and Pearl River Mart has played a large part for 50 years. The small business opened in 1971 and has moved over five times from its original Chinatown location due to commercial leases expiring. Company president Joanne Kwong said that their newest location has a good feel to it, and they are excited for this year's festivities. (Spectrum News NY1)
