Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:

  1. An Asian American dancer was attacked en route to his performance in New York’s Public Theater. The unidentified dancer was attacked near Seward Park in the latest incident in a disturbing trend of anti-Asian violence in the city, and across the nation. The dancer was set to perform as part of Chinatown dance troupe Yip’s Dragon Style Kung Fu and Lion Dance at the Public's Lower East Side location. (Deadline)
  2. Congressmember Jerry Nadler endorsed Grace Lee for state Assembly in the 65th District on Thursday. Lee is a community activist and co-founder of the local organization Children First and is locked in one of Lower Manhattan's most competitive races in the June 2022 Democratic primary. Nadler made the announcement at Southbridge Towers, located next to 25o Water St., which has been at the center of Lee's community activism. (The Village Sun)
  3. Chinatown residents brace for the effects as work gets underway on the Manhattan Detention Complex. In a project slated to take eight years, construction crews will begin razing the existing building within weeks. Local business owners have already felt the impact of the project as many have been forced to close their doors and try to relocate. (NY City Lens)
  4. A massive 42-foot, 32-ton floodgate was lifted into place near Stuyvesant Cove Park as part of the city's East Side Coastal Resiliency Project. The 10-foot-high gate is the first of 18 total gates to be installed as part of the project and will remain open to provide access to the waterfront. While the project moves forward, many community members continue to voice their opposition to the city's plan. (WABC-TV)
