Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:

  1. A study by the Asian American Federations Seniors Working Group found that the vast majority of Asian senior citizens in New York are afraid to leave their homes amidst the spike in anti-Asian hate crimes. The survey of 153 Asian seniors and 15 Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) found that 75 percent of Asian seniors are afraid to leave home due to unprovoked attacks. Safety concerns for the AAPI have led to free aid to those who are wary of walking home by themselves, such as self-defense courses held in Chinatown, free self-defense kits distributed by Fire Lieutenant Sarinya Srisakul, and Safety Walks teams. (AMNY)
  2. Tenants of the Knickerbocker Village organized a press conference to demand that the Division of Housing and Community Resources stop the sale of their residence to L+M Development Partners. According to the group's recent statement, residents fear that L+M will try to displace low-income tenants in favor of wealthier renters. They have collected 800 signatures in opposition over the past few weeks. (Bowery Boogie)
  3. Milagros Mata, 63, said that her public housing apartment has been in need of critical repairs while she is recovering from open heart surgery. Mata, a grandmother from the Dominican Republic, lives in the Baruch Houses, and has cited issues such as mold, paint chipping in her hallway, and water coming up from the tiles in her floors. After a pipe burst in her closet, crews came and patched it up with only cardboard and duct tape, which has caused damage to the light fixtures on the other side of the wall in the kitchen. (WPIX 11 New York)
  4. The Alliance for Community Preservation and Betterment is holding a rally, and representatives will speak at today's Community Board 2 (CB2) meeting to discuss the city's plan for a new homeless shelter at 231 Grand St. The rally will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the CCBA at 62 Mott St., and attendees can attend the CB2 full board meeting virtually at 6:30 p.m. Information about the meeting can be found here.
