LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — A man who punched and kicked a 61-year-old woman on the Lower East Side has been charged with attempted murder, prosecutors said.

He is accused of punching the woman, knocking her to the ground, and then continuing to stomp on her head and kick her as she lay motionless as he searched through her purse, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said in a statement. Brown only stopped attacking the woman when another person approached, prosecutors said.
Brown, 24, was arrested in a nearby deli. The woman suffered bleeding in her brain and remains hospitalized, authorities said.
