Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:
- Bodegas and local elected officials are looking to use zoning laws to defend against the looming threat of grocery delivery startups. Names such as GoPuff and Gorillas have become major players throughout the Lower East Side and the city as a whole. These businesses exist in somewhat of a gray-area between warehouse and grocery store, raising concerns about their zoning designation. (CNBC)
- Two Latin American galleries joined forces to expand into a shared space on the Lower East Side. Colombia’s Instituto de Visión, and the Lima, Peru-based Revolver Galería are working together to share Latin American art exhibits in New York City. Galleries and the art industry as a whole have suffered mightily throughout the pandemic, and this collaboration represents a mutual push to continue to grow. (Art Newspaper)
- A supporter of the extremist group Boogaloo Boys was arrested in an Airbnb across from Stuyvesant Town with two unmarked "ghost guns" and an ammo cache. District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the sentencing of 40-year-old Kurt Therkelsen of California to four years in prison. A search of the residence revealed two 9-millimeter pistols as well as 11 high-capacity magazines, four additional gun frames and other gun parts, ammunition and tools for assembly. (The Village Sun)
