A 17-year-old was killed in an early morning crash in Chinatown on Tuesday, police said.

CHINATOWN, NY — A 17-year-old was killed in an early-morning crash in Chinatown on Tuesday, police said.

Authorities say the teenager, Shareef Bellerand, was involved in an alcohol-related accident. The driver, 22-year-old Gerald Joseph, was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. Joseph was also injured in the crash.

The NYPD said the car was driving north on the Bowery off the Manhattan Bridge at about 1:08 a.m. on Tuesday. The vehicle, which was being driven by Joseph while Bellerand was in the passenger seat, struck a fire hydrant near Bowery and Canal Street and flipped over, according to an NYPD spokeswoman.
