Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:
- Manhattan's Chinatown named as the New York City region recipient of the annual Downtown Revitalization Initiative competition. The honor includes a $20M grant to use toward economic development projects. (The Business Journals)
- The Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association held a Tuesday press conference to urge residents to speak out against the Chinatown redistricting plan. The proposed redistricting would split Chinatown into two distinct State Senate districts. Chinatown community leaders are concerned that the splitting of the neighborhood into two districts will leave Chinatown's residents with less of a voice in local politics. (AMNY)
- The death of a 22-month-old Lower East Side boy on June 17, has officially been ruled a homicide due to drugs begin present in his system. Officers found the toddler unresponsive in his family's Baruch Place apartment, and was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital. No arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning.
