Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:
- Public officials Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams denounced the killing of Christina Yuna Lee as the latest tragedy in a string of unprovoked anti-Asian attacks in New York and across the country. Hochul took to Twitter to say, "I join New Yorkers standing together in support of our AAPI friends & neighbors," while Mayor Adams added, "We stand with our Asian community today." Many local residents gathered at a rally on Monday near the victim's Lower East Side apartment building, chanting "Enough is enough!" (PBS NewsHour)
- Residents of Chinatown have been marginalized since the onset of the pandemic, and still face a long road to recovery ahead. While COVID-19 numbers are beginning to trend in the right direction, Chinatown continues to suffer the hardships of the pandemic, with some residents claiming that the area is in a worse situation than it has been to date. Chinatown's residents have not only weathered the economic and public health hardships of the pandemic but have been routinely stigmatized and blamed unjustly for the virus. (AMNY)
- A fire on the tracks at the Fulton Street subway station on Monday night caused large amounts of smoke, and train delays. FDNY firefighters responded at approximately 7:20 p.m. on Feb. 14. Video shows a large amount of smoke inside the station as people made their way off the platform. (ABC 7 NY)
