Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:

  1. Coronavirus cases have spiked by over 60 percent in Manhattan in recent weeks. Cases have been on the rise across the nation, and Manhattan is no exception, with a rate of 274.3 new cases per 100,000 residents being reported between Dec. 6-12. Nationally, nearly 118,000 cases were being reported daily by Dec. 10, compared to approximately 86,300 at the beginning of December. (Lower East Side-Chinatown Patch)
  2. Yu and Me Books, New York's first Asian American woman-owned bookstore, opened on Saturday in Chinatown. Located on Mulberry Street, Yu and Me Books represents a lifelong dream of owner and founder Lucy Yu, as well as a direct response to the surge in anti-Asian violence during the pandemic. The 27-year-old storeowner dreamed of providing a space for Asian, Black and Latinx voices to be heard. (NBC News)
  3. Two men were taken into custody by the NYPD in connection with the shooting that shattered a window at the Great Oaks Charter School on Delancey. Police officers removed the two men from their vehicle on Grand Street two days after the shooting occurred. A clip of the arrest being made immediately went viral on TikTok, and quickly amassed over 1 million views. (Bowery Boogie)
