Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:

  1. A 37-year-old skateboarder was arrested after defacing the George Floyd Statue in Union Square Park. Michael Beals will face a criminal vandalism charge after throwing a can of point on the statue of Mr. Floyd. Local authorities have been looking for the suspect since October 3 when the act of vandalism occurred. (NBC New York)
  2. The East Broadway Mall, a staple of commerce in Chinatown, is at risk of shutting down. the mall that once employed thousands of workers underneath the Manhattan Bridge has shrunk from 80 to 17 tenants. The local mall was ravaged by the pandemic, and is struggling to survive through the threat of taxes, and gentrification. (WABC-TV)
  3. Climate change activity blocked off a stretch of the FDR on the Lower East Side during rush hour traffic. The demonstration was intended to bring attention to the dangers of climate change ahead of president Joe Biden's visit to New Jersey on Monday. The activists were demanding that president Biden fully support the $3.5 billion reconciliation package to combat climate change. (Daily Mail)
