Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:
- City workers took chainsaws to tree limbs at East River Park despite the court order that is in place to halt the construction. A temporary restraining order was secured on Wednesday, preventing the construction to continue at the park along the East River. The city went ahead with the work anyways, which will result in the removal of 1,000 trees from the park before it is rebuilt. (New York Post )
- Hundreds of protestors took the the streets in Lower Manhattan on December 11, where they were demanding the abolishment of winter evictions. The January 15 end date of the eviction moratorium is fast approaching, and local residents are doing everything in their power to prevent it. Eviction defense groups such as Brooklyn Eviction Defense, Flatbush Tenant Coalition, Housing Justice for All, Crown Heights Tenants Union, and others organized the march to implore elected officials to extend the moratorium to May, 2022. (AMNY)
- A subway conductor was assaulted at the Bowling Green Station while taking a No. 5 train out of service. The attack occurred around 9 a.m., and the extent of the victim's injuries was not immediately known. (PIX 11 NY)
