Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:
- A man was killed by gunshot in his apartment at the Lillian Wald Houses when he opened the door for the killer. The suspect entered the building at approximately 10 p.m. on Jan. 14 before uttering the phrase, "Did someone call for an Uber?" The suspect proceeded to shoot 30-year-old Davon Venable at point blank range. The suspect remains unidentified, and the NYPD now seek the public's help to bring the suspect into custody. - This month marks the one-year anniversary of the SafeWalks NYC program. The initiative, which began in Bushwick in response to a number of violent acts at the Morgan Avenue L train station, quickly expanded into Chinatown as a way to combat anti-Asian hate crimes. The organization continues to try to make a lasting impact on its communities and is still welcoming new volunteers to help the program. (WPIX 11 New York)
- A local filmmaker is the brain behind a forthcoming documentary celebrating the Lower East Side. Charles Libin's "High on Ludlow Street" will highlight fond memories that the artist has of the time he spent living in the neighborhood. Read an interview with Libin here. (Bowery Boogie)
- A local 67-year-old woman has died after being struck by a school bus. Anhon Lau was hit on the intersection of Catherine and Monroe streets at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Dec. 16. (Paywall: New York Daily News)
