LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — A teenager has been charged with arson in connection with the fire that destroyed a Lower East Side synagogue, according to police.

An NYPD spokeswoman confirmed to Patch that a 14-year-old had been charged after Sunday's fire. The teenager was not named by police because he is a minor.

FDNY officials continue to investigate the fire, which destroyed the vacant Beth Hamedrash Hagadol synagogue and took hours to extinguish. A department spokesman told Patch on Wednesday morning that the exact cause of the fire was still not known.
