Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:
- Incoming councilmember Christopher Marte is gearing up for his fight for Chinatown rezoning. Marte said his central focus will be implementing the rezoning proposed by a grassroots organization named the Chinatown Working Group in 2013, which would help preserve the affordability of the neighborhood by creating a "special district." The plan would protect resident by placing height limits on new developments and create zoning laws that would require affordable housing. (AMNY)
- Famed dim sum hall Jing Fong will return at a new location. Almost a full year since its closing, the eatery will reopen at 202 Centre St. The new establishment will feature 100 seats for dining, a fraction of the enormous 800 seats boasted at the former location. (Eater NY)
- Police are looking for a suspect who robbed a man on a Lower East Side train platform. Two 20 year olds, a man and a woman, were at the Bowery subway station when they were approached by the unknown man. The suspect pulled out a black object, threatened to shoot them, and demanded that they give him their money before making off with a gold chain. (AMNY)
