Mom And Son Thrown Down Stairs Of A Lower Manhattan Train Station

A 58-year-old woman is in critical condition after getting thrown down the stairs of the Canal Street N station, according to police.

CHINATOWN, NY — A 58-year-old woman is in critical condition after she and her son were yanked down the stairs of the Canal Street N station in Chinatown, according to police.

The robbery gone wrong happened Saturday at 9:40 a.m. as the woman was walking up the train station stairs with her 22-year-old son, police said. NYPD says that they were exiting the station when an unidentified man commented on the son's backpack before forcefully pulling on the bag.

As the son began falling backward, he reached out and grabbed his mom, causing them both to tumble down the stairs, according to the Daily News.

The unidentified man fled without the bag, and the mom was left at the bottom of the stairs with severe head trauma, police say. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, where the 58-year-old underwent emergency brain surgery, reported the Daily News.

The 22-year-old son has minor injuries, according to police.
