Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:
- Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou, who represents multiple neighborhoods in Lower Manhattan, announced her intention to run against incumbent Brian Kavanagh for the 26th State Senate District position. Niou currently represents a smaller section of the city, including Chinatown, the Financial District, Battery Park City, and parts of the Lower East Side. Niou has represented the 65th Assembly district since 2017. (Reverb MSN Music)
- Ed Higgins III, renowned artist of the Rivington School movement in the 1980s, sadly passed away at the age of 72. Known for his unique "mail art," Higgins had lived at the same Ludlow Street residence since 1976. Many of us who have lived in the Lower East Side have likely passed by his work, namely the Wingnut icon, and have not even known it. (Bowery Boogie)
- Arlene’s Grocery has decided to close its doors for the week in light of the rampant COVID-19 surge in the city. Many performance spaces in the city are following suit, or at least implementing stricter mask mandates at their venues. (Bowery Boogie)
