Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:

  1. City Council candidate Allie Ryan and a handful of fellow protestors were arrested Monday morning while they protested the beginning of the demolition of East River Park. Following a small standoff in the early morning, a massive police detail was sent to the park's tennis courts, where the demolition of the park was set to begin on Nov. 1. Ryan was placed in plastic cuffs while protesters chanted "Save this park!" Construction workers began removing the chain link fencing around the tennis courts as early as Monday morning, while this story is sure to develop further in the coming weeks. (The Village Sun)
  2. A group of mobile delivery workers have begun to mobilize against the spike in crimes against their fellow food delivery workers. Delivery Boys United, spearheaded by 39-year-old Vincent Carrasco, have taken matters into their own hands by organizing and coming to the aid of delivery workers who have fallen victim to theft or violence. Frustration stemming from the lack of help from local authorities has been mounting among the roughly 65,000 delivery workers in New York City. (Digital Journal)
  3. Approximately 2,300 New York City firefighter were out sick on Monday when the city's vaccine mandate went into effect. All municipal workers were required to have at least one dose of an approved vaccine by Oct. 29. Mayor Bill de Blasio stated in a Monday press conference that he has "every reason to believe we have a lot of people out there claiming they are sick when they are not," and that there would be consequences for employees who are lying about their status.
