Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:

  1. The former Red Square retail building has been demolished in order to make way for a new development. Purchased nearly 6 years ago by the Dermot Company for $100 million, the residential portion has been upscaled in the meantime. The adjacent new development is expected to rise six stories and occupy 68,531 square feet. (Bowery Boogie)
  2. Crab du Jour has closed after only one year of business. The Grand Street eatery on Grand and Suffolk streets has been shuttered for the last several days, and customers realized that they could no longer order from the restaurant on food delivery apps. (Bowery Boogie)
  3. Jason Barr, an economics professor at Rutgers, recently penned an opinion piece in the New York Times, directed at Mayor Eric Adams, proposing that the city should add 1,760-acres via landfill to Lower Manhattan. His ambitious plan would extend the reach of Manhattan to below Governor's Island. He believes that this extension of land would improve resiliency to the threat of rising sea levels and could provide 180,000 new homes that could house 247,000 people. (Dezeen)
