Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:
- A local nonprofit is looking to revive and rebuild the Brooklyn Banks skate park. Brooklyn Bridge Manhattan hopes to reunite the pockets of unused space after more than a decade since its initial closing. The overall goal of the project involves the expansion and beautification of Brooklyn Banks, and other public spaces in the neighborhood. (Bowery Boogie)
- Police arrested 48-year-old Christian Jeffers Wednesday for an attack in the 14th Street and Seventh Avenue subway station the night before. Jeffers allegedly attacked a 29-year-old Asian man with a hammer, striking his head and drawing blood. He was charged with assault, aggravated harassment and menacing, all as hate crimes. (The Village Sun)
- Schools Chancellor David C. Banks attended a virtual meeting with members of the Community Education Council of District 2, with a particular focus on improving enrollment. A shocking enrollment decrease by more than 2,000 students in the past year has been a cause for concern among community leaders and educators. Initially thought to be a product of the pandemic, the continuing trend may signal another root cause. (AMNY)
