Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:
- Members of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) rallied outside of their union headquarters in Lower Manhattan on Monday night. The New York City teachers said that they feel abandoned by their union leaders, claiming that the UFT has joined forces with Mayor Eric Adams in ignoring their requests to lobby for a remote option while the omicron variant surges. Teachers are concerned for their students, many of whom are at home and receiving no education. (PIX 11)
- After nearly 50 years, the beloved Dress Shoppe II is closing its doors. After two years of struggled related to the pandemic, along with landlord disputes, the owner Saroj Goyal has decided that shutting down her store is her best option. Goyal and her husband emigrated from India in the 1970s and opened their business in 1977. (WION)
- The 7-Eleven on Delancey Street is closing permanently after nine years in business. The arrival of the 7-Eleven itself caused a stir in the neighborhood when it first opened in 2012. (Bowery Boogie)
