Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:
- Construction appears imminent on the proposed super-tall tower in Two Bridges. Crews have begun digging test pits in the rear parking lot of the Lands End II residential complex, the site of the planned 70-story development. Rumors have been circulating that serious digging could begin within the next few weeks, according to Bowery Boogie. (Bowery Boogie)
- A group of runners came together on Monday night to honor the life of Christina Yuan Lee, the 35-year-old Lower East Side resident who was murdered last week. The Group, "Run for Chinatown," runs the perimeter of Chinatown every Monday night, and this week decided to run 35 miles; one for each year of Christina Lee 's life. The runners circled Lee's block 175 times, in an effort that took over 7 hours. (AsAmNews)
- Residents of Chinatown are continuing to push back against the city's plans to increase the number of homeless shelters in the area. The proposed shelter at 91 East Broadway has been the target of the majority of criticism, though there are believed to be as many as four proposed shelters on the horizon. Residents are in fear of threats posed by these shelters in the wake of a disturbing rise in anti-Asian violent crimes during the past few years. (CBS New York)
- Local legislator Christopher Marte has proposed a bill that would ban grocery delivery apps from advertising 15-minute delivery times, citing worker and pedestrian safety concerns. The bill is part of a larger legislation package aimed at curbing the rapid rise of these delivery services. Marte has been an outspoken supporter of protecting local bodegas and other businesses.
