Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:
- Over a hundred Lower Manhattan residents rallied in protest of the city's plan for a new jail in the heart of Chinatown. Piled onto the steps of the Manhattan Detention Complex at 125 White St., community leaders and concerned residents voiced their concerns with the destruction of the current jail complex to make way for a new, bigger jail. The rally was led by Neighbors United Below Canal (NUBC) and Council Member Christopher Marte who has stood firmly against the jail plan, as well as a vocal supporter of closing Rikers Island. (AMNY)
- The Lower East Side Ecology Center has relocated its headquarters to Seward Park. They were forced to be relocated on account of the city's East Side Coastal Resiliency Project demolition of East River Park. (The Lo-Down)
- Friedman's opened in May 2021 at 357 Grand St. before it was shut down by the end of the year. A printout on the window noted a temporary closure for maintenance issues, but it is uncertain when the restaurant will officially reopen. (Bowery Boogie)
