Malverne's Whalen Gets Gold Star for His Efforts

High school economics teacher earns award for building financial literacy in his students.

Michael Whalen, an economics teacher at Malverne High School, has been named a Gold Star Teacher for the 2014-15 school year by W!SE, an educational nonprofit that endeavors to build financial literacy in young people.

He was chosen for the honor based upon his students achieving a 90 percent passing rate on the W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Test last year. He will be honored at the annual MoneyPOWER Conference for Financial Literacy in New York City in November. Whalen is one of approximately 300 teachers across the country who met the criteria for this award. He had also been named a Gold Star teacher for the 2012-13 school year.
