SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Rex Heuermann, who faces six murder charges in connection with the deaths of three sex workers in the Gilgo Beach slayings, had one question for his jailers during his intake last week.

"Is it in the news?"

That's according to CNN, which cited an anonymous source.

Heuermann, 59, of Massapequa Park, faces three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder in the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello, whose remains were found along Ocean Parkway in 2010, prosecutors said. Heuermann pleaded not guilty.

Investigators are looking into whether he is tied to the killings of the six other Gilgo Beach victims, News12 reported.

Heuermann is also a person of interest in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, whose remains were found near the other three women in December 2010. Their remains were also found in similar fashion — each were bonded and wrapped in camouflage burlap bags usually used for hunting, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said. The four women were nicknamed the "Gilgo Four."

Heuermann was placed on suicide watch while in custody within the Suffolk County Correctional Facility, authorities said Monday.

In March 2022, a New York State Police investigator identified Heuermann as a person of interest in the Gilgo case, NYSP Major Stephen J. Udice told reporters Monday. The investigator, put on a task force a month prior, was the first person to name Heuermann as a suspect in the Gilgo killings, Udice said.

"I want to emphasize that although it was the New York State Police investigator that was responsible for identifying the subject, it was the teamwork of the task force as a whole that helped move this case to where it is today," Udice said. "The agencies involved in this investigation worked seamlessly with one another with the objective of identifying the individual responsible for these crimes."
