Evaluating the New Distracted Driving Law

A new law that stiffens penalties for distracted driving has taken effect. How do you feel about it?

A new law designed to protect motorists from distracted drivers took effect in New York State recently.

The law calls for stiffer penalties for those who text or talk on the phone while behind the wheel.  

The fine for a first offense will be up to $15. FOr a second offense within 18 months, there is a $200 maximum fine. For three or more offenses within 18 months, the maximum fine goes up to $400.
