MASSAPEQUA, NY — After 10 days of collecting, six large boxes were filled in the lobby at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District with donations benefiting veterans.

The student council partnered with Island Harvest for the Operation Hope care package drive. All donations are distributed to veterans and military families on Long Island. Students in each grade level were asked to donate specific body care items, toiletries, household cleaning supplies and nonperishable food.

Adviser Kelsey Downey said that by asking each grade to bring certain items, it ensured the school would collect a variety of needed goods for the care packages. Student council members helped to promote the drive, which ran from Nov. 1 to 10, to set the collection up for success.
