In a year in which Massapequa had a record five National Merit Scholarship finalists, two of those students have won scholarships.
Massapequa High School seniors Robyn Tse and Joseph Zappa each received $2,500 scholarships from the prestigious program.
They eaned the program's top honors based on their scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Their academic record and outside activities also factored into the decision.
About 8,300 students around the country receive the scholarships, that's less than one percent of students in the US.
"These truly outstanding students have proven to be among the top of their peers across the country,” said Dr. Barbara Williams, principal of Massapequa High School.
Tse will attend Yale in the Fall, while Zappa is headed to Brown.
