A strange police manhunt and the fight over an emergency room were the top issues in the final week of August.

There was gunfire and chaos in East Massapequa on Friday after cops were called to Unqua Road about a possible burglar. Police stopped a man and an officer fired a shot when, police say he reached for his waistband. Later, there was a brief standoff at an East Massapequa home and a man was taken into custody. But he was later released.
Monday's meeting of the Massapequa Park Village Board drew a capacity crowd and some spirited questions about the possibility of building an emergency room facility on Sunrise Highway.
Massapequa School Board member Jane Ryan was honored by the county for he business success.
